Ferguson, Christopher J, et al. "The Influence Of
Heritability, Neuroticism, Maternal Warmth And Media Use On Disordered Eating Behaviors: A Prospective
Analysis Of Twins." The Psychiatric Quarterly 83.3 (2012): 353-360. MEDLINE. Web. 6 Nov. 2013.
This article is a credible source for my research because it
was written by a professor of psychology; Christopher J. Ferguson. Psychology
is the study of humans and in particular, the human mind. The author’s
credentials include his professorship at Stetson University, his published
articles on mental health, and a published author of a book entitled “The
Suicide Kings”. This article was published in “The Psychiatric Quarterly” on
September 1st, 2012. The author’s main goal in this article is to
inform, persuade and teach on a subject through experiment. He is testing the
genetics and heredity of eating disorders among many different types of people.
This article targets an audience of scientists or people who are curious about
this disorder that many Americans suffer from. This audience would be
interested in this article because he uses testing to gain results that show data
such as that 40% of female eating disorders are due to genetics. The audience
would generally agree with the outcome because of the evidence and the work
done to achieve it. The author’s evidence has credibility because of his
accomplishments as well as because of the experiments done to prove it. He
incorporates statistical as well as testimonial evidence. The evidence is
limited because of the people who were apart of the experiments. It seems to
have different results for each person. Based on my own opinion I would have to
agree with this author even though it goes against my thesis. His evidence is
sound and based on his testing, it seems as though there are plenty of other
factors that cause an eating disorder. I think this article is important to
include in my essay because of the information and the opposing side it
presents.
J, is it possible that the answer to your question isn't either/or? Could your research suggest a both/and answer? In other words, both genetics AND culture influence the onset of eating disorders?
